Hello, Adversity.

Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, wrote that there are three constants in life—principles, choices, and change. First, we have principles that come from deep within, which we must discover for ourselves. Then, we have the choices that we make. And with each choice, we are led down paths that allow us to grow and change.

I believe there is a fourth constant in life which we simply cannot avoid “adversity.”

We all experience adversity. Whether daily or over an extended period. It pops up in a variety of forms. We deal with it in our health and well-being, relationships, parenting, finances, failures, successes, love, and loss, to name a few. As a result, our lives are literally riddled with a series of challenging circumstances and events.

Adversity isn’t something that can be avoided, nor should it be. But just like with the constants of principles, choices, and change, it can be used for our betterment. Every adverse experience presents us with a growth opportunity. By tackling adversity, we can discover our principles. By tackling adversity, we can unlock doors and pathways to prosperity. By tackling adversity, we can develop a growth mindset.

Whether we realize it or not, we can use any adverse situation and experience to our benefit. The challenge is that many of us are not naturally equipped with the mindset and tools to help us persevere through difficult situations. When faced with adversity head-on or choosing to run away, many choose the latter. Life can be hard, but we don’t have to fear the hard times. No matter your circumstance or situation, you are capable of facing it and persevering through it. You may not have the tools to do so at the moment, but they can be developed. More to come.
